Repair crews on standby after roof leaks disrupt Malaysia Open at Axiata Arena

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Stadium Corporation (MSC) and the contractor overseeing the roof replacement at Axiata Arena have stationed over 10 personnel on standby to prevent further leaks, following disruptions on the opening day of the Malaysia Open.

On Tuesday, a leaking roof disrupted the Malaysia Open, with matches halted on two of the three badminton courts at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

The incident caused significant disruption during the Malaysia Open Super 1000, affecting Courts 2 and 3.

MSC Chief Executive Officer Iliyas Jamil said immediate action was taken to redirect the water from 4.30pm, enabling play to resume on the affected courts by 8pm.

In a statement on Wednesday, MSC apologised for the disruption and outlined preventive measures, including the deployment of personnel.

The corporation added that repairs are ongoing after the Public Works Department (PWD) and the contractor identified the affected areas.

The Malaysia Open 2025 began on Jan 7 and will run until Jan 12.

The leak stemmed from the replacement of the original roof, which had been in place since 1998. Renovation work, which began in mid-2024, is expected to be completed within a year.

MSC said the roof replacement was planned to ensure the venue remained operational, with no prior incidents reported until this week.

Ahead of the Malaysia Open, MSC met with the Federal Territories PWD and the contractor on 30 December, stressing the importance of ensuring the event would not be disrupted.
