Asian record holder Fadhil aims to be a master of all

Track cyclist Fadhil Zonis has made quite a reputation for himself in the one-kilometre time trial (1km TT) event following several impressive performances in recent seasons.

However, the Asian record holder is keen to develop across all three disciplines within the sprint category of track cycling — the sprint (individual and team), keirin and 1km TT.

Fadhil, the youngest member of the men's elite track squad, is willing to put in the work to excel in the other two disciplines.

"Although some training blocks are the same as the sprint and keirin, there are differences for the 1km TT," said Fadhil, who turned 23 last month.

"The event focuses on endurance compared to sprint and keirin.

"At the moment, Azizulhasni Awang and Shah Firdaus Sahrom are better than I am in the sprint and keirin, so I have been focusing on the 1km TT.

"However, I still want to be prepared for all three events.

"It all depends on what national coach John Beasley wants me to do. If he wants me to focus on a specific programme, then I will do it.

"I have also been taking the initiative to watch training and racing videos to brush up my tactical skills in the sprint and keirin."

Fadhli broke both the 1km TT national and Asian records by clocking 1:00.305s at the Berlin World Championships last year.
