MNCF suspend cycling coach over alleged sexual harassment

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) have suspended a coach following a police report made by a female athlete over alleged sexual harassment during training.

MNCF vice-president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill said the athlete made a police report on Thursday, and as a precautionary measure they have immediately suspended the coach pending an investigation by the disciplinary board

"We are shocked by the news, and the MNCF take this matter seriously, as it concerns the safety of national cycling athletes. The MNCF have suspended the coach until further notice as a precautionary measure, and the allegation is under investigation," said Amarjit today.

"The coach is also not allowed to have any kind of communication with the athlete during the suspension.

"The athlete has also made a police report."

It is learnt the athlete has alleged that she was sexually harassed on a few occasions this year.

Amarjit who admitted he was shocked over the allegation, said MNCF won't tolerate any form of harassment against athletes, but stressed that the allegation needs to be investigated thoroughly.

He said MNCF will fully cooperate with all the agencies involved in the investigation, and will ensure that the newly introduced Safe Sports Code by the government is obeyed by all.

Amarjit said if the allegations are true, actions that can be taken include licence suspension, termination of service contract or cancellation of appointment to the national team.

"We take a zero-tolerance approach towards any form of sexual harassment and other behaviours prohibited under the Safe Sports Code or any current legislation.

"We will not compromise on the safety and welfare of our national cyclists," said Amarjit.
