Tough outing for Shah in second leg of UCI Champions League

KUALA LUMPUR: National rider Shah Firdaus Sahrom was unable to advance past the early rounds at the second leg of the UCI Track Champions League in the Netherlands yesterday.

Shah finished third from as many riders in his first round men's individual sprint heat at the Omnisport Velodrome in Apeldoorn.

Trinidad and Tobago's Nicholas Paul took the top spot while Colombia's Kevin Quintero was second. Only the winner from the heat advanced to the semi-finals.

Paul would go on to reach the final but lost to current world and Olympic champion Harrie Lavreysen (Netherlands).

The keirin event saw Shah placing fourth from six riders in his first round heat, which was again won by Paul. Only the winner advanced to the final.

Colombian Cristian Ortega won the final with Lavreysen and Paul coming in second and third.

Shah's performances in the second round of the series earned him eight points, which takes his tally this season to 17 points. He is now 13th in the overall standings.

After round two, Lavreysen has displaced Great Britain's Matthew Richardson atop the standings with 71 points to his name. Richardson is second on 64 points while Paul is third (58 points).

The third round will be held in Apeldoorn tonight.
