Shah still in search of form in UCI Champions League

KUALA LUMPUR: National rider Shah Firdaus Sahrom has yet to make it past the early rounds in the UCI Track Champions League this season.

In the third round of the series yesterday, Shah finished third from as many riders in his first round men's individual sprint heat at the Omnisport Velodrome in Apeldoorn.

Suriname's Jair Tjon En Fa won the heat while Trinidad and Tobago's Nicholas Paul came in second. Only the heat winner advanced to the semi-finals.

Netherland's Harrie Lavreysen beat Great Britain's Matthew Richardson in the final, to the delight of an adoring home crowd.

In the keirin, Shah finished fourth from six riders in his opening round heat. Colombian Christian Ortega and Lavreysen took the top-two spots in the heat and advanced to the final.

Richardson won the final with Ortega and Lavreysen settling for second and third.

Lavreysen continues to lead the men's sprint category standings on 106 points with Richardson second, five points adrift. Ortega is third on 84 points.

Shah is 14th with 24 points after three rounds.

The last two rounds of the season will be held at the Lee Valley Velopark in London on Dec 6-7.
