KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Cup runners-up Kedah are weighing their options on getting the services of former Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) coach Mario Gomez to lead the team next season.
The management of Kedah Football Association (KFA) have contacted the 60-year-old Argentine two days ago and made him an offer.
Gomez, who confirmed the latest development, said he is interested in making a return to Malaysian football, and he has verbally accepted KFA’s offer.
“I am now waiting for a decision and subsequent answer from Kedah, as we had discussed two days ago and I do not have any problems with the contract that was offered.
“It’s just that we did not discuss in detail but I have told them that I accept the proposed salary figure,” he said when contacted in Argentina today.
KFA are looking for a coach to replace Mohd Nidzam Adzha Yusoff who openly stated that Kedah should look for a more experienced coach after they lost 2-0 to JDT in the Malaysia Cup final earlier this month.
Gomez is the ideal candidate for the Red Eagle squad based on his achievements with JDT over two seasons where he led the Southern Tigers to the 2015 AFC Cup, back to back Super League titles in 2015 and 2016, and the FA Cup last year.
He was also the top candidate to coach the national team but because of contractual disagreements, the FA of Malaysia (FAM) chose Portuguese Nelo Vingada instead.
“I am interested in coaching Kedah because they are a team steeped in history, and always up there competing for titles, and they have a plan, ” said Gomez who also revealed that he did not receive any other offers apart from the one Kedah have made him.
However, apart from Gomez, Kedah’s former coach two seasons ago, Ramon Marcote, was also shortlisted as a possible candidate to coach the FA Cup winning team.
