KUNSHAN: Qualifying for the quarter-finals of the AFC Under-23 Championship means a lot to Matthew Davies as he had given up his Australian citizenship to represent Malaysia.
The Perth-born defender was granted citizenship in 2015 and the move, he feels, has paid off following Malaysia’s stunning run in China.
Davies said he was hoping for a clash against Australia in the last eight.
“It did not materialise as Australia were ousted in the group stage. I am a bit disappointed as I was hoping to face them,” said Davies.
“It does not matter as South Korea are equally strong. I made the right decision to play for Malaysia.”
The Pahang captain is ready to give everything he has on Saturday.
"Korea will be a tough opponent. Our goal was to make the quarter-finals here and now that we have achieved it, we will continue with our good form,” he added.
