KUALA LUMPUR: Irfan Bakti Abu Salim has backed his protege, Nafuzi Zain, for the national Under-23 team coaching job.
Irfan, who brought Nafuzi into the Terengganu senior team during their successful run from 2017 to 2019, praised his former assistant's ability.
"Nafuzi has always been someone I've great faith in, both as a player and as a coach. I've seen him grow in both roles, and I believe he's more than ready to take on this challenge (national Under-23 team)
"He has the experience, the tactical awareness and most importantly, the passion to develop young talent," said Irfan.
The buzz surrounding the potential appointment of the 46-year-old Nafuzi as the new national Under-23 coach has been building in recent weeks, with reports suggesting he is the leading candidate to replace Spaniard Juan Torres Garrido.
"His ability to work with young players is one of his standout qualities. Nafuzi understands the needs of emerging talent and knows how to provide them with the platform to succeed. I have no doubt he will bring out the best in young players and lead them to success on the international stage."
Irfan also praised Nafuzi's strategic thinking and work ethics, qualities he believes will be crucial as Malaysia look to build a cohesive and competitive national team.
"We need someone who understands the modern demands of football and knows how to build a strong, united team.
"Nafuzi ticked all those boxes. His experience, coupled with his ability to connect with players, will make him an asset to the national team," said Irfan.
