KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor were forced to pay a hefty compensation to the organisers of last month’s Meizhou Hakka Cup in Guangdong following their withdrawal from the tournament.
And it was not cheap as the Red Giants had to pay the organisers, Meizhou Hakka FC, a China League One side, RM150,000.
The team pulled out due to the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak in China.
The FA of Selangor (FAS) made the decision to withdraw their team after consulting coach B. Satiananthan and his players.
Meizhou initially demanded RM300,000 as stipulated in an agreement but later decided to slash it by 50 per cent.
FAS secretary-general Dr Johan Kamal Hamidon said: “We managed to negotiate with Meizhou and they subsequently agreed to reduce it by 50 per cent. We have paid them.”
Selangor will start their Super League campaign against Pahang at the Darulmakmur Stadium in Kuantan on Feb 29.
