Kedah subdue 10-man PJ City to stay in Super League hunt

KUALA LUMPUR: Kedah kept their Super League title hopes alive by beating 10-man Petaling Jaya City 4-1 at MBPJ Stadium today.

The Red Eagles started the ball rolling through Lebanese midfielder Rabih Ataya's strike off a freekick in the fourth minute before Liberian striker Kpah Sherman helped himself to a brace four minutes into the first half added time and in the 56th minute.

PJ City managed to reduce the deficit through Khyril Muhymeen Zambri with his 61st minute strike, which was his first goal of the season for the team.

However, the Phoenix's hopes of mounting a comeback suffered a blow when centre-back Mohammad Raffi Nagoorgani was sent off in the 70th minute after getting his second booking for bringing down Tchetche Kipre.

Kedah youngster Fayadh Zulkifli Amin restored his side's three-goal lead after finding the net in the 92nd minute.

The win moved Kedah to third spot in the 12-team Super League standings with 35 points from 17 matches, while PJ City remained ninth with 18 points.

Kedah's third win in a row came despite a 14-day quarantine after their players tested positive for Covid-19.

The Northern side now trail league leaders Johor Darul Ta'zim by 13 points with two matches in hand. The Southern Tigers, however, can seal their eighth Super League title with a win over Pahang in Kuantan on Friday.
