KUALA LUMPUR: Brendan Gan is eager to fight for his national team spot for the King's Cup in Chiang Mai next week.
Brendan was called up by Harimau Malaya coach Kim Pan Gon following impressive performances for his club, Selangor, in the M-League, about 10 months after he won his battle against testicular cancer.
With 16 matches under his belt thus far for Selangor this season, Brendan has more than proved his fitness for international duty.
"It's a huge honour to be back in the national team after facing so many challenges in life. I will do my best for the team and country.
"Hopefully, we can do well in the King's Cup," said Brendan before training at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya today.
"When I was away from the game, I watched all of the matches during the Asian Cup qualifiers (in June).
"The team were aggressive and that is how I like to play my football.
"Hopefully, we can all come together as a team and prove how good we can be."
Malaysia will open their King's Cup campaign against Thailand in Chiang Mai on Sept 22.
Brendan, who has 17 caps, does not want to take things for granted and will push hard to impress Pan Gon in training.
"At the moment, I'm fit and back to where I want to be.
"Of course, I still have to improve my game.
"I still have to do some tests (for cancer) but that is normal.
"I am in good shape and raring for international action."
Pan Gon is using the King's Cup to evaluate his trainees ahead of next year's Asian Cup.
