KUALA LUMPUR: A group of people will be knocking on the doors of three Malaysian football legends.
Khalid Ali, P. Darmalinggam and S. Pushpanathan will be visited by officials from the National Unity Ministry (KPN), FAM and National Athletes' Welfare Foundation as part of the Unity Carnival -Merdeka Tournament.
The main goal of the visit, themed Visit and Greet, is to remember the heroics of these footballers and learn more of their contributions to the nation.
"It's for us to appreciate and understand Malaysia's football history, and for the younger generations to learn of these legends' contribution and delve deeper into the national spirit and commitment to sports," said KPN in a statement.
KPN chief secretary Datuk Azman Mohd Yusof hopes that the carnival will be a memorable national event whereby the country pays tribute to its legends.
"Sports and unity is a strong machine that helps unite the nation. This carnival is a chance for us to celebrate that," said Azman.
Khalid, 66, who helped Malaysia qualify for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, is currently undergoing treatment for lung cancer.
Darmalinggam, 62, who has suffered a stroke, played in the 1982 Delhi Asian Games and 1986 Seoul Asian Games. Pushpanathan, 68, a member of the legendary 1980 Olympic squad, is suffering from intestinal issues.
