KUALA LUMPUR: Kedah should be celebrating its 100th year in football this year, but a nightmare could be looming.
Kedah Darul Aman (KDA) FC is at risk of being booted out of the Super League due to issues with unpaid wages and have until April 20 to settle outstanding payments or show proof they are capable of settling the payments.
If they fail to do so, KDA could lose their national licence, which means the club will not be eligible to compete in the Super League for the 2024-2025 season.
Sports analyst Datuk Dr Pekan Ramli believed that only Kedahans could save their beloved team.
This included the state government, which should work out a solution with KDA.
Pekan said KDA should be saved as football was one of the main forms of entertainment in the state.
"Football is cruel. You have fun together, but when times are tough, you are on your own.
"The centennial should be a celebration filled with nostalgia as they (Kedah) have been involved in football since 1924.
"Although the team was privatised in 2021, Kedah is still Kedah 'Pulun Kedah Pulun' is chanted when they play at the Darul Aman Stadium, but for how much longer?
"Besides football, is there any other sport that can put a smile on Kedah fans' faces?"
Kedah have an illustrious history in the M-League and won the Super League back-to-back in 2007 and 2008, completing a treble in both years.
The Canaries have also won the FA Cup five times, the Malaysia Cup five times as well as the Charity Shield three times.
