KUALA LUMPUR: In the wake of two alarming incidents involving national footballers Faisal Halim and Akhyar Rashid, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) is urging players to prioritise their safety.
This includes considering hiring personal bodyguards.
FAM president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin agreed with the suggestion that players should hire personal bodyguards as a practical solution to ensure their safety, particularly in public places.
He said that while this option might not be feasible for all players due to financial constraints, it could provide an additional layer of protection, especially for high-profile athletes.
"While not all players may have the financial means to hire bodyguards, it's a sensible idea, especially for star players who may attract unwanted attention. Personal safety is paramount, and if financially capable, players should consider this option," Hamidin said during an interview at the FAM headquarters yesterday.
The recent incidents involving Akhyar, who was robbed in Terengganu, and Faisal, who was splashed with acid in Kota Damansara, highlighted the vulnerability of athletes when out in public.
Hamidin expressed concern over these incidents and reiterated the importance of players taking precautions to safeguard themselves.
He also announced plans to enhance security measures during national team training camps, particularly at hotels.
He reiterated FAM's commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of players, both on and off the field.
"As part of our efforts to bolster security, FAM will be implementing stricter controls during national team training camps, with particular emphasis on hotel security," Hamidin said.
These measures come as FAM seeks to address growing concerns over the safety of football players, and to provide them with adequate support and protection, in light of recent events.
