SHAH ALAM: Despite going through a traumatic and painful time, national footballer Faisal Halim has displayed remarkable spirit after the horrifying acid attack last Sunday.
Dr Hazwan Khair, the sports science chief at Faisal's club, Selangor FC, expressed optimism about his recovery.
Faisal was splashed with concentrated sulphuric acid by unknown assailants while entering his car at a shopping mall in Damansara, causing him to suffer fourth-degree burns to several parts of his body, including his face.
Dr Hazwan said Faisal is holding up well and will undergo his third surgery later today at a hospital in Shah Alam.
"We're delighted with Faisal's progress. Both the medical team and surgeons are impressed by his resilience, marking his transition into the reconstructive phase.
"At this juncture, strict protocols are in place to ensure his well-being, limiting visitation to minimise complications during this critical phase. While updates may be sparse due to upcoming surgeries, we are immensely pleased with his progress," said Hazwan.
"Nutrition plays a pivotal role in Faisal's rehabilitation. We meticulously control the composition of his diet, opting for soft foods to facilitate consumption."
Hazwan disclosed plans for another surgery later in the week, contingent upon the surgeons' assessment of Faisal's skin condition.
Amid speculation over his future due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Faisal's upbeat spirit offers a glimmer of hope to Malaysian football as he is a prized national player.
"Daily interactions with the surgical team indicate Faisal's positive mood, a promising psychological indicator of his recovery journey. His resilience and optimism are encouraging signs," said Hazwan.
