Pregnant AC Milan players will automatically have their contracts renewed during final season

KUALA LUMPUR: AC Milan have made a landmark move by becoming the first elite European football club to introduce a comprehensive maternity policy for female players and staff.

This pioneering policy ensures that the players automatically have their contracts renewed if they become pregnant during the final season of their current agreement.

Announced last Friday, the policy is designed to support female players and technical staff by fostering an environment where they can make significant life choices with confidence.

Elisabet Spina, head of women's football at AC Milan, said that this initiative marks a significant step forward for Italian clubs.

"AC Milan have always been dedicated to the well-being of our female players and staff, both professionally and personally.

"We were the first Italian club to contribute social security benefits to our players, even before professionalism was formally introduced. Our commitment is further demonstrated through the #WeAllAreFootball manifesto, which addresses gender issues and leads to tangible actions and improvements in our club's infrastructure," said Spina.

In addition to automatic contract renewal, the policy includes a one-year extension on the same economic terms for players whose contracts are set to expire during pregnancy. It also provides support with childcare during sports activities and covers travel expenses, including flights and accommodation, for the players' children and one companion.
