PM to FAM: Set KPIs to strengthen Harimau Malaya, football ecosystem

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the FA of Malaysia (FAM) to develop a comprehensive plan with key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure Harimau Malaya's continued improvement.

During a meeting with FAM's top brass today, Anwar called for structured goals and measurable outcomes to boost the national football team's performance.

"We want to see a clear plan from FAM, with KPIs to ensure Harimau Malaya grow stronger on the international stage," read a statement from the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS).

The call comes as the government pledges RM15 million to support the national senior and under-23 squads.

Anwar explained that this funding is part of a broader government effort to boost the nation's sporting achievements.

"The RM15 million will be closely monitored by the Finance Ministry and KBS to ensure its proper use and deliver tangible results."

He assured that the investment in football would not reduce funding for other sports.

KBS, in cooperation with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), will conduct a comprehensive review of the National Football Development Programme (NFDP), overseen by the National Sports Council (NSC).

"We are working with AFC to assess our football development programmes and identify areas for improvement," said Anwar.

He reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening Malaysia's overall sports ecosystem.

"Our goal is not just to enhance football but to build a strong sporting culture across all disciplines.

"The RM15 million is a testament to our commitment, but it's just the beginning of a larger national sports movement."

Earlier this month, the Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim "hinted" at the potential privatisation of Harimau Malaya as a strategy for a brighter future.
