KLFA to decide Megat's KL City takeover bid after elections

KUALA LUMPUR: Businessman Datuk Seri Megat Shahriman Zaharudin will have to wait until next month's Kuala Lumpur FA (KLFA) congress-cum-elections to find out if his bid to become the majority shareholder of Super League side KL City is successful.

It's been two months since Megat publicly announced his intention to acquire a 51 per cent stake in the club, but no definitive response has emerged.

The KLFA congress-cum-elections, initially scheduled for Sept 7, has been postponed to Oct 12, delaying the decision-making process further.

"I made my offer, and while they acknowledged it, they informed me that the formation of a new exco is causing the delay. They sent this information to me in writing.

"I hope that once the new committee is in place, they will meet with me to discuss the potential sale. It's neither a yes nor a no at this point," said Megat.

His interest in the club comes at a crucial time, as KL City are facing financial woes, including salary disputes.

Megat's passion for sports and his extensive corporate experience make him a strong candidate to revive the struggling club.

To make matters worse, the Malaysian Football League (MFL) recently slapped KL City with a six-point deduction, a RM100,000 fine, and a season-long transfer ban for the 2024-25 season.

The club are also barred from applying for an Asian Football Confederation licence for the next two seasons, adding urgency to the situation.
