Vicente hopes to use Auckland FC to help Harimau sharpen their claws for NZ friendly

AUCKLAND: This should sharpen Harimau Malaya's claws for the tougher task ahead, and Auckland FC also look like easy meat.

World No. 132 Malaysia, who will play an international friendly against No. 95 New Zealand at North Harbour Stadium in Albany on Monday, will first have a warm-up against Auckland FC in a closed-door test match in Auckland today.

Auckland FC, who were only formed six months ago, indicated they are very excited to play against Malaysia, who will be their first ever Asian opponents.

Malaysia coach Pau Marti Vicente hopes that Auckland FC give his team a good warm-up for the much tougher match against New Zealand.

Auckland FC, who have former Japanese star Hiroki Sakai, hope to give Malaysia a tough time.

Spaniard Vicente sees the match against Auckland as a valuable opportunity for assessment and team development.

"These friendlies are special because it has been 18 years since Malaysia last faced New Zealand, who are a tough opponent," he said.

Since last Sunday, the Malaysian team have been training at a field next to the North Harbour Stadium.

In a move to engage with the local community, the Malaysia team will have an open training session at Rongomai Park tomorrow. Fans are invited to watch Harimau Malaya train, and they can interact with players and officials.

South Auckland Rangers president Shiu Singh said: "This is a first for the South Auckland Rangers, and we are honoured to support New Zealand football.

"I'll be watching the game, but half of me will cheer for the All Whites while the other half cheers for our guests."

New Zealand Football chief executive officer Andrew Pragnell said: "We are delighted to host Malaysia as we continue to expand our global relationships in the sport."
