KUALA LUMPUR: Caretaker coach Pau Marti Vicente has the chance to end his tenure with Harimau Malaya on a high note, potentially earning a second title with the national team.
After guiding Malaysia to victory in the Merdeka Tournament in September, the Spaniard is now set for his final assignment in the Asean Cup, which kicks off on Sunday.
It would be rare for a national coach if Vicente wins his second title with Harimau Malaya.
However, it would be a tough campaign as Malaysia will be fielding a mixed squad. Several regulars have opted out due to club commitments for the Asean Cup, held outside the Fifa international window.
Malaysia will begin their Group A campaign against Cambodia in Phnom Penh on Sunday.
Defending champions Thailand, Singapore and Timor Leste round out the group.
On Wednesday, Vicente confirmed that he and his coaching staff will part ways with the FA of Malaysia (FAM) following a decision to restructure the national team's management.
Originally contracted until the end of 2025, the 41-year-old said: "I've faced many challenges in my career, but this is the first time I'm leaving before completing my contract,"
"Normally, I stay until the end. However, this decision is not mine, and I respect and accept it. I will give my best until my last day," Vicente said at KLIA, Sepang, before departing for Phnom Penh today.
Vicente, who joined as assistant coach to Kim Pan Gon in February 2022, took over as head coach following the South Korean's resignation in July.
"It will feel strange to face my last game or training session with Harimau Malaya. I've been with the team since 2022, and it will be emotional for sure.
"However, I must focus on the Asean Cup and not worry about things beyond my control."
Vicente remains optimistic despite the challenges, stressing that the team are ready to take on world No. 180 Cambodia.
"The Asean Cup is a dream for all Malaysians, and the players are highly motivated," he said.
"We have a good mix of experienced and young players, some of whom have competed in major tournaments.
"They understand our mission for the tournament, and while we aim to go as far as possible, we won't put unnecessary pressure on ourselves."
Vicente also called on Malaysian fans to turn out in force for the team's home matches during the tournament.
The top two teams from Groups A and B will progress to the semi-finals on Dec 26-27 and Dec 29-30.
