JDT grateful for trios' early release ahead of Champions League clash

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) have expressed their gratitude to the FA of Malaysia (FAM) for releasing three of their players - Arif Aiman Hanapi, Feroz Baharudin, and Matthew Davies - early from the national team.

This will allow the trio to travel with the club for the AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE) competition.

The Southern Tigers are set to face Chinese giants Shandong Taishan in a crucial ACLE encounter on Nov 25, with the team departing for China on Thursday.

The release of the trio ensures they have adequate time to prepare for the continental fixture, which comes just days after Malaysia's international friendly against India on Monday.

In a statement, JDT CEO Alistair Edwards praised the understanding shown by Harimau Malaya head coach Pau Marti and FAM.

"We are grateful for the early release of Arif, Feroz and Matt as we finalise our travel arrangements for the ACLE," said Edwards.

"JDT have made significant investments this season, and a successful campaign not only enhances the club's status in Asia but also benefits Malaysian football as it boosts our country's club ranking.

"This could pave the way for more Malaysian teams to compete on Asia's elite stage in future seasons."

Edwards reiterated JDT's commitment to supporting the national team's objectives, including Malaysia's efforts to qualify for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.

JDT confirmed that goalkeeper Syihan Hazmi will remain with the national team as Andoni Zubiaurre is their first-choice keeper for their ACLE campaign.
