Kim Swee weighs his options, Sabah to promote from within

KUALA LUMPUR: Football coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee is expected to announce his next move over the next few days.

Kim Swee is leaving Sabah after spending three successful years with the team and made his last appearance with them during Sabah's 4-0 win over PT Athletic in the Malaysia Cup round-of-16 (first leg) at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras on Saturday (Nov 23).

The 54-year-old confirmed that he is currently weighing several offers, both domestically and internationally.

"This decision is not an easy one. I've spent three wonderful years at Sabah, but I am looking for a new challenge in my coaching career. I need to make this choice to achieve my personal goals and to grow as a coach," said Kim Swee yesterday.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to coach Sabah, but it's time to move forward. The offers I've received, both within the country and internationally, are exciting and I hope that wherever I go next, I will be able to show that I can achieve even greater success."

Kim Swee added that he is confident in the Sabah squad's ability to continue their strong form without him, praising the professionalism of the players.

"They know their responsibilities, and they will remain focused on the task ahead, regardless of whoever takes over. This team is on the right track and I believe they will continue to perform at a high level."

Following Kim Swee's departure, Sabah have decided to promote from within, a decision which was made unanimously by the Sabah Football Association committee.

Team manager Rafie Robert said the coaches at the club have the ability to continue implementing Kim Swee's coaching philosophy.

"The existing coaching staff already know the training methods and tactical nuances developed under Ong Kim Swee.

"The players are comfortable with these approaches, and we're confident this will help sustain the momentum we've built over time," said Rafie.

Rafie said that introducing a new coach at this stage could disrupt the team's rhythm, adding that the management is focused on executing a seamless transition.
