KUALA LUMPUR: As Malaysia prepare for the Asean Cup football tournament from Dec 8-Jan 5, the spotlight will be on the selection of players.
Former international Azlan Johar believes that coach Pau Marti Vicente's 26-man list will inevitably come under criticism.
The Spaniard will have to make do with the players released from M-League clubs as some teams have refused to let go of their players due to the Asean Cup being played outside of the Fifa window.
"It's never simple. It's about balancing experience with youth, listening to the fans while sticking to a strong tactical philosophy.
"I believe the decisions made now will shape the future of the national team," said Azlan.
He said the strategy of expanding the players' pool will ensures a higher level of competition for places in the starting XI.
"A player's ability to fit into the team culture and demonstrate his tactical awareness will be just as crucial as individual skill.
"This is particularly important for the younger players coming through the ranks, as they need to show that they can handle the demands of international football," said Azlan.
In the Asean Cup, Malaysia are drawn in Group A with Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia and Timor-Leste.
