Tunku Ismail, Tengku Amir in frame for FAM hot seat?

KUALA LUMPUR: With FA of Malaysia (FAM) president Tan Sri Hamidin Amin opting not to seek reelection, the most coveted position among national sports associations is now up for grabs at next year's elections-cum-congress.

While many may vie for the post, only those with the capability to continue Hamidin's legacy should take charge to further elevate Malaysian football.

Sources told Timesport earlier that Datuk Joehari Ayub, a current FAM vice-president, is a potential contender for the top job.

Selangor FC technical committee chairman Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar is also reportedly linked to the role.

However, one of the most talked-about candidates is Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, the former FAM president and the Regent of Johor.

Supporters of his return believe his experience and legacy could help restore the country's footballing fortunes.

Additionally, the Crown Prince of Selangor and FA of Selangor president, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has also been linked to the presidency.

Hamidin, however, could still make a surprise return in a different capacity, as FAM has provisions to appoint an honorary president.

Of FAM's 20 affiliates, only 19 will be eligible to vote on Feb 15, following the suspension of the FA of Perlis (FAP).

The FAP was penalised during today's FAM executive council meeting for failing to settle unpaid wages and compensation owed to their former football director, Matt Holland.

The number of eligible voters could drop further to 18 if the FA of Kelantan faces a similar suspension over internal issues concerning its annual general meeting and elections.

Both FAs, however, may regain their voting rights if outstanding issues are resolved before the congress.

Hamidin, who was reelected unopposed for the 2021-2025 term at the 57th FAM Congress, confirmed speculation about his decision during a press conference after an FAM executive council meeting.

"I want to give our members the opportunity to choose a new leader," said Hamidin.

"I have been at the helm of this big organisation for six and a half years now, and I think it is time for me to step down."

He also dismissed claims that fan pressure had influenced his decision.

Hamidin first took over as FAM president in 2018, succeeding Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

During his tenure, the national team qualified on merit for this year's Asian Cup in Qatar — their first appearance in 43 years — and climbed FIFA's world rankings from No. 171 to No. 132.

Before becoming president, Hamidin served as FAM vice-president and general secretary.
