KUALA LUMPUR: Harimau Malaya have a golden opportunity to improve their FIFA world ranking of No. 132 at the Asean Cup, as the tournament has now been recognised as an official 'A' match event.
Previously considered a friendly tournament with limited ranking points, the Asean Cup's new status ensures that match results will directly impact world rankings.
In a statement on social media platform X, Asean Football described the move as a milestone for regional football.
"FIFA's recognition of the Asean Cup as an official 'A' match tournament is a testament to the growing stature of our regional competition and its importance on the global stage," said the organisation.
This new status also raises the stakes for players and teams.
"This recognition gives players and teams an added motivation to perform. Fans can expect the best lineups and even greater intensity on the pitch," Asean Football added.
The tournament kicks off tomorrow, with Harimau Malaya taking on Cambodia in their Group A opener in Phnom Penh.
