KUALA LUMPUR: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) general secretary Datuk Seri Windsor John believes the decision by FA of Malaysia (FAM) president Tan Sri Hamidin Amin to not seek re-election next year presents an opportunity for fresh leadership to elevate Malaysian football.
"This is a decision we must respect, and perhaps he wants to offer the chance for others to take Malaysian football to a new level. We must respect the decision he has made," said Windsor.
Hamidin, who succeeded former President Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim in 2018, is also a FIFA Council member and an AFC executive committee member.
After six years in charge, his decision to step aside has led to speculation about his motivations.
"For someone like Hamidin, it must not have been easy to decide not to defend his seat. The reason is something only he can confirm," Windsor said.
"The decision he made must have been carefully considered, as someone in that position usually finds it tough to step away.
"But Hamidin has decided to let it go. Why? We won't know until we hear it directly from him. Until then, we can only speculate," Windsor added.
The FAM congress and elections will take place on Feb 15 next year for the 2025-2029 term.
