PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Hamidin Amin will not defend his FA of Malaysia (FAM) president's post at its congress on Feb 15 next year.
Hamidin, who was reelected uncontested for the 2021-2025 term at the 57th FAM Congress, confirmed recent rumours about his decision during a press conference following an FAM executive council meeting today.
"I want to give an opportunity to our members to choose a new leader," said Hamidin.
"I have been at the helm of this big organisation for six and a half years now, and I think it is time for me to step down.
"I reached this decision a while ago after discussing it with my family," he added.
Hamidin dismissed suggestions that fan pressure influenced his decision.
"Fans have a right to criticise, I cannot deny that. But this decision is an opportunity for our member associations to choose a new leader by following the correct processes."
Hamidin was first elected FAM president in 2018, succeeding Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
Under his leadership, the national team qualified on merit for this year's Asian Cup in Qatar — their first appearance in 43 years — and climbed the FIFA world rankings from No. 171 to No. 132.
Before becoming president, Hamidin served as FAM vice-president and general secretary.
