KUALA LUMPUR: The entry of a darkhorse, said to be a 46-year-old prominent entrepreneur with a strong track record in domestic football, has added another twist to the FA of Malaysia (FAM) presidential election.
The candidate, according to insiders, can bring a fresh, apolitical perspective and substantial financial resources to Malaysian football as the national body seeks a new leadership for the 2025-2029 term.
"This individual has the potential to redefine Malaysian football, deliver the leadership and integrity needed to elevate the sport.
"This candidate's vision aligns with Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim's call for dynamic leadership, emphasising connections, competence, and a transparent electoral process," a source close to the matter said today.
The election for the FAM president's post (to be vacated by Tan Sri Hamidin Amin) on Feb 15 next year, is expected to be a four-way battle. The other likely three candidates are current FAM vice president Joehari Ayub, former FAM deputy president Datuk Seri Afandi Hamzah and CEO of Tickethotline Datuk Azril Mat Drus.
Seen as the frontrunner for FAM's No.1 job is Joehari. He has garnered significant support, including a formal endorsement from Sabah FA whose president, Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, has voiced confidence in Joehari's vision and leadership.
"We support and will nominate Joehari to contest for the FAM presidency next year," said Shahelmey.
Meanwhile, Afandi has announced his readiness to return to FAM if nominated. "If I receive nominations, I will contest. Any Malaysian citizen is eligible under the statute," said Afandi.
Meanwhile, Azril, the CEO of Tickethotline, is also seen as a darkhorse in the FAM presidential race.
He is a familiar figure in the football fraternity. Azril, who has been actively involved with local teams, including Setiawangsa Rangers FC in the KLFA league, previously served as an adviser in Brunei's Yakin Football League. He also has experience as a member of FAM's local competition committee.
However, Azril has remained tight-lipped about his candidacy.
With a mix of seasoned leaders and ambitious newcomers in the race, the FAM presidential election is shaping up to be an offering of ideas and visions in shaping Malaysia's football future.
