Debt-ridden Kedah appeal to fans, sponsors for support

KUALA LUMPUR: Kedah are rallying their fans and sponsors to help the club survive a deepening financial crisis that threatens their future in the Super League.

Majority shareholder Tan Sri Dr. Daud Bakar has issued a heartfelt appeal, urging Kedahans to contribute in any way they can to keep the team afloat.

"To all Kedahans, this is your club, your team — please step up and play your part," said Daud in a statement today.

"Wishing for change alone is not enough. It takes real effort and involvement.

"If you are willing to help, we welcome any form of collaboration, funding, or support to keep Kedah competing and representing the pride of the state."

Despite the challenges, Daud praised the loyal supporters who have stood by the club through its darkest moments.

"To our fans who still come to matches and provide support, whether at home or away, your dedication brings light to the toughest times. This is a legacy worth fighting for," he said.

Kedah are operating with limited resources, relying on contributions from a shareholder, a few sponsors, and revenue from ticket and merchandise sales. However, Daud admits these sources are insufficient to meet the club's needs.

"There is no main sponsor, no external support, and we have yet to find a suitable buyer or new owner despite many expressing interest," he said.

The financial strain has led to mounting pressure on Kedah, with some suggesting that the club cease operations.

However, Daud remains committed to the team's survival, describing it as a legacy for the people of Kedah.

"I was advised to dissolve Kedah as early as January 2024. But how could I give up without making an effort?" said Daud.

"I managed to settle all outstanding salaries for the 2023 season by April 2024, allowing the club to compete in the 2024/25 season.

"For me, this club represents the pride and legacy of Kedah, and I will continue fighting for it as long as I can."
