Rough finish for Ashley, Kiwi Lydia wins Olympic gold in women's golf

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Ashley Lau concluded her Olympic debut with a disappointing joint 55th place finish after carding a six-over 78 in the final round.

Ashley wrapped up her campaign with an eagle on the par-five 18th hole, but this late surge couldn't prevent her from slipping three more positions from her overnight standing.

She finished the 72-hole contest at Le Golf National with a total of 18-over 306.

Her final round was marred by a series of dropped shots, conceding nine strokes over a disastrous seven-hole stretch starting from the ninth.

The most damaging setback came at the par-four 13th, where she recorded a quintuple bogey after hitting her ball into the water three times.

New Zealand's Lydia Ko claimed the gold medal despite a modest final round of 71, finishing at 10-under 278.

Germany's Esther Henseleit emerged as a surprise silver medalist, firing a 66 to finish two shots behind Ko.

China's Lin Xi Yu secured the bronze medal at seven-under overall after posting a 69.
