PETALING JAYA: A Ryder Cup-style team match play event is set to light up the national golf scene with the inaugural Albatross Cup, scheduled for Jan 6-7 at Seri Selangor Golf Club.
The much-anticipated affair will pit the cream of Malaysian men's professional golfers against each other, with current and former national No. 1s Gavin Green and Danny Chia captaining their respective teams for bragging rights.
Gavin, the sole Malaysian competing on the DP World Tour, will lead a 12-man side featuring Jeremiah Kim as vice-captain, alongside Gavin's younger brother Galven Green, Paul San, Shahrifuddin Ariffin, Nicholas Fung and Marcus Lim among other notable players.
Danny, a two-time Asian Tour winner, will be supported by vice-captain Khor Kheng Hwai. Their roster include former Sea Games gold medallist Ervin Chang, Amir Nazrin Jailani, Daeng Abdul Rahman Abdul Aziz, and rising stars Edven Ying and Fakhrul Akmal.
The first day of competition will see both teams fielding their best combinations in four-ball matches during the morning session, followed by foursomes in the afternoon.
The decisive second day will feature 12 singles matches, with the first team to reach an unassailable 12 points over the two days being crowned champions.
"The Albatross Cup is about celebrating Malaysian golf at its highest level. I'm excited to lead such a talented team and can't wait to see how we rise to the challenge," said Gavin, who created history as the first and only Malaysian to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit in 2017.
"This is a great opportunity to showcase the depth of talent we have in Malaysia while creating an exciting spectacle of golf for fans. I'm confident that Team Danny will do their best to emerge as the inaugural Albatross Cup champions," said Danny.
