Australia crush Chile in the rain

KUALA LUMPUR: Australia finally won their first Junior World Cup match when they beat Chile 7-1 in Group A at the National Stadium on Wednesday.

Playing under a blanket of non-stop rain, from the national anthems to the final hooter, Chile proved to be a stubborn team to subdue and even managed to score one goal. But they collapsed in the second half.

For the record, Malaysia had also beaten Chile 7-1 in their opening encounter on Tuesday.

Earlier, Australia bungled against Argentina, when they let in a 58th minute goal and lost 1-0. The Burras next play Malaysia on Friday while Argentina meet Chile in their final Group A matches.

Australia's goals were scored by Cooper Burns (11th), Brodee Foster (17th), Craig Marais (20th), Campbell Geddes (30th), Will Mathison (47th), Craig Marais (52nd, 53rd).

Joaquin Munoz (14th) scored for Chile.

Australian coach Jay Stacy said they never planned for an avalanche of goals, but just a win.

"My players really enjoyed playing in the constant rain and the pitch was very good. We tried some new stuff (after losing 1-0 to Argentina) and slowly build up our game.

"There was a marked improvement in our team and that's what we will be looking for in our next match (against Malaysia)," said Stacy.
