IPOH: Paris Olympics-bound New Zealand delivered a tough defensive lesson to Malaysia, narrowly edging out the hosts 3-2 to secure third place in the Sultan Azlan Shah (SAS) Cup in Ipoh today.
The Speedy Tigers took an early lead through Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal, who netted his eighth goal of the tournament in the third minute at the Azlan Shah Stadium.
However, the Black Sticks quickly responded, with Scott Cosslett equalising just two minutes later before Jonty Elmes put New Zealand in the lead in the 10th minute.
Dane Lett extended New Zealand's advantage in the 48th minute.
Malaysia's Fitri Saari reduced the deficit with a goal in the 60th minute.
Credit to Sarjit Singh's men, who put up a strong performance but found New Zealand goalkeeper George Enersen a stumbling block in the first half.
In the second half, New Zealand replaced Enersen with second-choice keeper Dominic Dixon, who blocked Azrai's penalty stroke attempt.
Sarjit was not disappointed despite the defeat.
"We started well. However, we made errors and allowed New Zealand to win the match," said Sarjit.
"The players created chances but did not take them.
"Overall, I am happy with our performance here. We will build from this for the Nations Cup."
