Nauraj breaks own national high jump record

KUALA LUMPUR: High jumper Nauraj Singh Randhawa renewed his own national record at the Singapore Open on Thursday while simultaneously qualifying for the World Athletics Championships in August.

Nauraj cleared 2.30 metres to improve on his own national mark by one centimetre, nearly exactly a year after setting the national record of 2.29 metres at the same competition on Apr 28 last year to qualify for the Rio De Janeiro Olympics.

The two-time Sea Games gold medallist attempted to clear 2.33m at the National Stadium in Kallang but was unsuccessful.

However, his winning effort was enough for Nauraj to book a ticket to London for his World Championships debut on Aug 3-14.

Nauraj, whose victory was his second of the year after also winning the Canberra Grand Prix, finished ahead of teammate Lee Hup Wei, who cleared 2.34m for second place.
