Ivan Yuen bags first national title, Nicol wins fourth at Ohana championships

KUALA LUMPUR: Ivan Yuen lifted his first national title while Nicol David claimed her fourth after winning their respective finals at the Ohana National Squash Championships on Friday.

Men's second seed Yuen saved two match points in the fourth game to upset two-time defending champion Nafiizwan Adnan 10-12, 11-3, 6-11, 12-10, 11-9 at the Jalan Duta Squash Centre and give his departing coach Ong Beng Hee the perfect parting gift.

Nicol, meanwhile, returned after a three-year absence from the tournament to beat Rachel Arnold, the 2015 Sea Games individual and team gold medallist, 11-4, 11-7, 11-5 to add to her previous wins in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Yuen looked headed for defeat when he trailed 10-8 in the fourth game but the match around with an audacious backhand cross-court drop to even the score before winning the tie-break.

World No 26 Nafiizwan led 5-3 in the fifth game but the 43rd-ranked Yuen drew level at 9-9 before benefiting from his opponent hitting into the tin twice.

"I am very happy to win my first national title," said Yuen, 26, who previously lost the 2014 final to Ong, who is leaving his national coach post to take up a lucrative offer in Qatar, and last year's final to Nafiizwan.

"It will definitely boost my confidence for my next tournament in New Zealand next month. I'm happy with my performance this week. I'm finally succeeded after coming close before."

World No 6 Nicol had few challengers at the tournament and cantered through her three matches to a fourth title.

But Nicol said: "The level has gone up from the last time I played here and I needed to be sharper and take my chances when I needed to."

The win was the perfect warm up for Nicol ahead of the PSA Tour World Series Finals, featuring the world's top eight players, which begins in Dubai on June 6.
