STAM unhappy 'Hawk Eye' fails to take off

THE Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia (STAM) are disappointed they have to scrap plans for camera-replay technology similar to tennis' Hawk Eye at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017).

STAM president Datuk Seri Ahmad Ismail said the new system was supposed to make its debut in the team event competition yesterday.

Ahmad claimed that the contractor for the system, which was appointed by the Malaysian Sea Games Organising Committee (MASOC) a year ago, failed to meet the specifications set by the International Sepak Takraw Federation (ISTAF).

"We have given the contractor numerous chances as they had initially promised to have the HD camera system completed by May," said Ahmad.

"But until yesterday they have yet to settle the issues faced and it still cannot be used.

"We have asked for at least six high definition cameras capable of recording 100 frames per second (fps) to allow for the "challenge system" to work well but they (contractors) only brought four cameras capable of 50fps."

Ahmad, however, is still hoping the system can be used in future sepak takraw tournaments.

"We are still open on the matter and do not want to point fingers. We will give them a chance to implement it in future tournaments."
