KUALA LUMPUR: A misfiring national sepak takraw team settled for bronze in the quadrant event after going down to Thailand in the semi-finals at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017) today.
Amirul Zazwan Amir, Muhammad Afifuddin Mohd Razali, Ahmad Aizat Mohd Nor Azmi and Muhamad Suhairi Sulaiman struggled to match their Thai counterparts at the Titiwangsa Indoor Stadium, going down tamely in straight games 21-16, 21-13.
Amirul Zazwan admitted it was a disappointing performance from the national team.
"We were not ready to handle the powerful service of the Thai's and were also unable to defend well. We had little opportunity to score points," said Amirul, when met at the prize giving ceremony.
"It is disappointing as we had hoped to at least reach the final.
"However, we have to accept the bronze as we really did not perform well today."
Malaysia and Indonesia, who lost to Myanmar, both received bronze as the event rules does not require a playoff.
As expected, Thailand clinched the gold with a 21-18, 21-19 win over Myanmar in the final.
