KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian women's indoor hockey team ended their campaign with a bronze medal when they beat Singapore 3-1 at the Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre.
In the final, Thailand beat Indonesia 4-1 to claim the gold medal.
The men's indoor final will be held today. Malaysia are the favourites to beat Indonesia to the inaugural indoor gold.
Over in field hockey, the Malaysian women beat Thailand 3-0 to claim their ticket to the final on nine points, with one match in hand against Myanmar tomorrow.
Hockey is expected to deliver three gold medals at the end of the day, with the men's field team being a sure bet.
Malaysia only seriously started playing indoor hockey five months ago, while Thailand and Indonesia have been actively competing for the last five years.
Today, Malaysia got their goals off Aishah Yaacob (third), Noorain Mohamed (ninth) and Qasidah Halimi (20th). The Singapore goal was scored by Sabrina Gofar in the 14th minute.
Malaysian coach K. Gobinathan appeared dejected, but said it was nevertheless a respectable outcome.
"We only just started playing indoor hockey seriously, as compared to Indonesia and Thailand. So, I guess a bronze medal is better than nothing," said Gobinathan, who hoped that the next Games hosts Philippines will include the sport.
