KL2017: Julian Yee, Kai Xiang win gold, bronze in men's figure skating

KUALA LUMPUR: It is a double podium finish for Malaysia in the men’s figure skating competition when Julian Yee and Chew Kai Xiang pulled out stunning free skate programmes to take gold and bronze, respectively.

Julian, a two-time World Championship finalist, beat long-time rival and Olympian Michael Christian Martinez of the Philippines after he recorded 132.40pts in his free skate programme, for a combined total of 33.8pts, ahead of Martinez.

The competition was held at the Malaysia National Ice Skating Stadium (MYNISS) in Damansara Perdana today.

Another Malaysian, Chew Kai Xiang picked up the bronze medal when he charted a 47.71pts to finish fourth but recovered with a solid routine, despite not sticking a double spin landing, to record a 97.81pts in the men’s free skate programme for a combined total of 145.52pts.

Earlier in the day, Malaysia’s women figure skaters Aneeta Lingam and Aina Sorfina Mohamad Aminudin only managed a fifth and ninth finishing, respectively.
