Ing Hock calls it a day

KUALA LUMPUR: After 14 years in para sports, national player Ting Ing Hock has decided to call time on his competitive career, following a positive outing at the Kuala Lumpur Asean Para Games (Para KL2017).

The 52-year-old said it is time for him to fully focus on his role as a coach for the table tennis development programme at the Paralympic Centre of Excellence in Kampung Pandan.

"I had just joined the (Para KL2017) training camp in July as I was busy with my responsibilities as a coach prior to that," said Ing Hock.

Ing Hock suffered an accident when he was 33 in Kuching, Sarawak which saw him sustain serious injuries to his leg and pelvis.

He was already a skilled paddler prior to the injury but it took him five years before he decided to take up para table tennis.

"I felt there was no hope for me in life after the accident but that changed (after para sports) and I feel a lot more positive in facing the future now.

"I hope more (disabled) people will take up para sports. I feel very lucky to have been able to do so."

Ing Hock ended his campaign at Para KL2017 with one gold and one silver.

He lost 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 to Indonesian Supriyatna Gumilar in the final of the men's singles SM9 today after having helped Malaysia win the men's team gold earlier this week.

He has won 14 gold in total since making his Asean Para Games debut 14 years ago.
