(Rugby) Daveta Rugby Club win Cobra 10s

KELANA JAYA: Daveta Rugby Club captured their second Cobra 10's title with minimal fuss at the Petaling Jaya Stadium today.

The Fijian side notched a comfortable 26-10 victory over defending champions Borneo Eagles, who were in search of their fourth Cobra 10's crown, in the final.

Daveta's tries were scored by Joseva Kuricuva, Luke Nadurutalo, Rusiate Tawalo and Leveni Tani with conversions from Timoci Tavuto (two) and Lemeke Tulele.

Team manager Larry Harding said it was a proud achievement for his young Fijian players after Daveta finished runners-up at the Singapore Cricket Club Sevens (SCC7s) last week.

"We expected a tough and physical match against Eagles who we had faced many times before. We knew we could not afford to play our usual wide running game," said Harding, who is also the team owner.

"I think the boys executed our game plan really well today and throughout the two days as well. The level of competition was very high here.

"It feels great to get our second win here after 2012 especially as this is a young team. Six players had never left Fiji prior to this tour (including SCC7s)."

Earlier, Daveta, who pocketed US10,000 (RM41,925) for the win, defeated Singapore Barbarians 26-0 in the quarterfinals before overcoming North Harbour of New Zealand 14-5 in the semi-finals.

Besides Eagles, Panthers Blowpipes were the only Malaysian side to make the cup quarterfinals.
