NSC dropping three major sports from Sukma 2018: Khairy

KUALA LUMPUR: Weightlifting, sepak takraw and taekwondo will be dropped from the National Sports Council’s (NSC) programme for Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) in Sept 2018, to be held in Perak.

The development was announced by Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who added that the decision was made at the NSC managers' board meeting, which Khairy chaired on Tuesday.

"The board of the NSC has decided to drop three main sports (reducing the number) from 19 to 16, and this is the first time since 2007," he said during an MoU signing ceremony between 100Plus and Malaysia Stadium Corporation (MSC).

Khairy said the sports were dropped due to a decline in performance, doping issues as well as power struggles within the associations.

Following the announcement, the three associations will be taken out of NSC's programme and have their funds revoked, as they are expected to manage and run themselves independently.
