KUALA LUMPUR: Weightlifting, Sepak Takraw, and Taekwondo have been dropped from 19 core sports under the National Sports Council (NSC) programme starting with the Malaysia Games in Perak next September, as announced by Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
Khairy said that such a decision was made during the NSC’s management board meeting that he chaired yesterday.
"I would like to announce that the NSC board have decided to drop three core sports from the list of 19 and this is the first time such a decision has been made since 2007,” he said during a press conference after the signing ceremony between 100Plus and Kuala Lumpur Sports City (KLSC).
Khairy said the move was made based on deteriorating performances, doping and leadership issues within the three sports associations.
With such a decision, the three sports associations involved will be takern out of the NSC programme, funding rescinded and they will have to manage on their own.
