KUALA LUMPUR: Thousands of squash fans and players around the world have voted Nicol Ann David the “Greatest of All Time” (GOAT).
The news was published in the Professional Squash Association’s PSA World Tour website yesterday.
In a tweet, the PSA World Tour wrote: “#Squash fans have voted @NicolDavid as the women’s GOAT!”
It went on to list Nicol’s impressive achievements:
• 8 World Championship titles
• 5 British Open Squash titles
• 81 PSA titles
• 102 PSA finals
According to PSA World Tour’s website, the Penang-born superstar is the first player of either gender to win the World Junior title twice; and she is the longest-reigning World No 1 in squash history.
Nicol held the No 1 spot for an unprecedented 109 consecutive months from 2006 to 2015.
"During that time-frame, (Nicol) won the World Championship title a total of eight times, racking up a 56-match unbeaten spell; while she became the youngest person ever to receive a ‘Datukship’ in her home state of Penang.
"She reached a total of 102 PSA event finals – winning 81 – and won four Asian Games gold medals alongside two Commonwealth Games gold medals," it wrote.
An honoured Nicol took to Twitter to express her appreciation:
“Truly overwhelming! A real honour 2 be voted as the greatest of all time by squash fans everywhere. I would like to thank all who have voted 4 me. I feel no matter how much time I'm given, it'll always be hard to grasp the intensity of this recognition.”
