CRC lift Cup but nearly pay price for over-confidence

PENANG Chinese Recreation Club (CRC) learnt a valuable lesson in their 6-4 win over arch rivals and defending champions George Town City FC in the final of the 45th Penang Chinese FA Senior League for the Lee Ewe Boo Cup recently.

After taking a comfortable 4-0 lead at half time, CRC took their foot off the pedal and allowed George Town to claw their way back at Universiti Sains Malaysia Mini Stadium in Minden.

Luckily for CRC, their players came to their senses and they stepped up a gear to win 6-4 and regain the Cup which they last won four years ago.

CRC team manager Albert Leong Siew Yee admitted that his players were guilty of over-confidence after going 4-0 up.

He said that they could have won comfortably had it not been for his men’s playfulness.

‘It’s an honour to win the prestigious Lee Ewe Boo Challenge Trophy. We were confident as our players worked hard and we had a balanced team,” Albert said after receiving the challenge trophy from former PCFA president Ewe Boo.

‘We are definitely not going to sit on our laurels. We will start our preparations soon.’

Meanwhile, two CRC players won top awards at the tournament.

Loh Lim Shen Jen was adjudged the Most Valuable Player while Yong Kuong Yong won the Top Scorer award.
