Asean Para Games floored by Covid-19, funding

The fate of the Asean Para Games (APG) is now in the hands of the Asean Para Sports Federation (APSF) as the Philippines have confirmed that they will not be hosting the event.

The Philippines was supposed to host the Games in January but later moved it to March 21-17 due to financial and logistical issues.

The competition was then postponed to Oct 3-9 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Philippines Paralympic Committee (PPC) president Michael Barredo said funding for the Games has been withdrawn by the Philippines Sports Commission (PSC).

"PSC announced that the Philippines will not be organising any sporting events for the rest of the year. They also withdrew their funding for the APG," said Barredo.

"At this moment, sports must take a back seat to address a greater issue.

"It is not feasible to organise the APG without government support.

"We will officially inform the APSF on the present situation so that they can decide on the next course of action.

Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC) president Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin said: "We will contact the APSF to get clarity on the status of the Games and will also speak to other Asean counterparts for feedback."

It remains to be seen whether other Asean countries, who are also struggling economically due to Covid-19, will step in and organise the APG.
