Ice skating: Frozen by coronavirus

THE national ice skaters have nothing much to look forward to this year as most international and domestic competitions have been cancelled or postponed amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The International Skating Union (ISU) were forced to postpone the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships (Seoul), World Figure Skating Championships (Montreal) and the World Synchronised Skating Championships (Lake Placid, United States), all scheduled between March and April, due to the deadly virus.

The fate of the upcoming Short Track Speed Skating World Cup Series (2020-21 season) for open and junior categories will be known soon.

The world body are expected to decide by Sept 11 on whether the rounds for the open category in Canada (Nov 6-8), Poland (Nov 13-15), and the junior event in Belarus (Nov 28-29) will go ahead.

Malaysia Ice Skating Federation (MISF) president Irene Cheow said: "It is disappointing because Julian Yee was set to compete at the (figure skating) World Championships this year.

"We will just have to wait and see if the ISU go ahead with the World Cup legs, but even if they do we will still have to follow the guidelines here in Malaysia.

"For the Junior World Cup, two other (host) countries (Canada and Slovakia) have withdrawn.

"Unfortunately, we are unsure when we can hold the postponed National Championships."

Julian, who is also Irene's son, is based in Barrie, Canada, where he is studying at York University.

Two-time Sea Games gold medallist and alpine skier Jeffrey Webb represented the country at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea. It was the first time Malaysia had participated in the Winter Olympics.
