KUALA LUMPUR: The management of Mid Valley Megamall has issued an apology following an escalator malfunction incident on Friday, which was captured in a clip that has since gone viral on social media.
IGB Real Estate Investment Trust (IGB-REIT), in a statement today, said the management of the mall views the incident seriously and will ensure all precautionary measures are implemented to resolve the matter as soon as possible and prevent future occurrences.
"We understand that this incident has caused distress to our shoppers and the general public.
"The management will be working closely with the Occupational Safety and Health Department and our maintenance operator, Toshiba Elevator (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, to identify the cause of the malfunction.
"We are relieved that there were no injuries and continue to advise all mall patrons to exercise caution when using the escalators," the statement said.
IGB-REIT added that the company is committed to providing a safe and comfortable environment for all who visit the mall.
According to a report published by Singapore-based English daily, The Straits Times, the malfunction on June 28 caused some parts of an escalator to "pop out" at the premises.
The report, which quoted social media user Xiaohongshu, said there was a sudden loud noise and some parts "popped out" of the top of the escalator as the user stepped onto it.
The social media user, along with other shoppers, then ran down the escalator, the report said.
