IN a little over three weeks, seasoned national diver Leong Mun Yee will be setting a new record when she graces the Olympics for the fifth time.
And all Mun Yee wants is to finally win an Olympic medal that she has been missing in her accomplished career.
It would certainly be a fitting final swansong for the 36-year-old who will become the only Malaysian to make five Olympic appearances when she takes her bow at the Tokyo Games from July 23-Aug 8.
The Perak-born has played a crucial role over the years in putting Malaysia on the diving world map.
Mun Yee has achieved podium results in just about every major sporting event.
Apart from winning three medals at the World Championships, she is also a seven-time Asian Games medallist. And she has also delivered medals at the Sea Games and Commonwealth Games since making her diving debut in 1998.
Mun Yee, who is in the twilight of her career, wants to go out with a bang as she targets a medal with Pandelela Rinong in the women's 10m platform synchro event in Tokyo.
"This is definitely my last Olympics, and my target is to finish with a medal," said Mun Yee during an online press conference yesterday.
"It was not an easy journey qualifying for the Olympics because we had to finish in the top three during the World Championships in 2019 to secure our spot early.
"We know we still need to be more consistent and have to put in more effort to finish on the podium.
"We have been working hard in training, and hopefully, we'll be able to peak during the Olympics.
"Physically, I think I'm in good shape and getting better. I believe that in three weeks, we'll be able to put up a strong showing."
Mun Yee-Pandelela, who bagged silver at the world meet in Gwangju in 2019, are Malaysia's best bet for an Olympic medal.
However, they will have to up their game if they hope to win a medal. At the Diving World Cup in May, they failed to impress scoring only 288.36 points to finish fourth in the synchro event.
The other Malaysian divers heading for the Olympics are Cheong Jun Hoong, Wendy Ng and Nur Dhabitah Sabri.
