Boccia player Chew Wei Lun stunned World No 2 Witsanu Huadpradit of Thailand to maintain his unbeaten run in Group B of the mixed individual BC1 (physical impairment) event at the Tokyo Paralympics yesterday.
Wei Lun edged Witsanu 1-0 in a tiebreak after both players were level at 3-3 in regulation play at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre.
The World No 11 then bounced back from 3-0 down in his second match to beat South Korea's World No 8 Jung Sungjoon 9-3.
Witsanu had defeated Sungjoon for the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia.
On Saturday, Wei Lun defeated Brazil's Andreza Vitoria Oliveira 5-2 in his opening match.
The 26-year-old will face Czech Republic's Katerina Curinova in the final Pool B match today. The top two from each pool will qualify for the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals and semi-finals will be held tomorrow, followed by the medal matches on Wednesday.
In swimming, Nur Syaiful Zulkafli was disqualified from his event yesterday.
The officials deemed that Syaiful had remained submerged for too long, exceeding the 15-metre limit, and was disqualified from his 100m breaststroke SB4 heat.
The 26-year-old was also disqualified last week for using a waterproof plaster to cover a boil on his shoulder during his 200m freestyle S5 heat.
Syaiful will complete his Paralympic campaign in the 50m freestyle S5 on Wednesday.
Besides Wei Lun, the other Malaysians in action today are powerlifter Jong Yee Khie (men's Under-107kg) and sprinter Siti Noor Iasah Ariffin (women's 400m T20).
